Jean Hildt, Roman’s wife, heard a US Embassy employee at a party in Lagos complain that there was no one to pack their household goods shipment. Seeing an opportunity, Jean offered to do it, and without any professional experience went to pack with her domestic staff the next day, and this was the beginning of a very successful business – Nigerian Maritime Services (NMS). Roman left his job in transportation and joined her. The business grew rapidly throughout Nigeria and soon became the largest moving company in Africa. However it all came to nothing with the beginning of unrest in Nigeria and the subsequent Biafran war. The Hildt’s left for Europe in 1966.
Roman joined northAmerican Van Lines, one of the largest moving companies in the world, and started a 20 year career, first in London, then Beirut, Munich, back to London and then at head-office in Ft. Wayne IN, USA. Over the years Roman established offices in Tehran, Nairobi, Johannesburg, Monrovia, Karachi, Singapore, Tokyo, Manila, Taipei, Hong Kong and Sydney. After retiring in 1987 he worked as a consultant mostly in India.
With the demise of Communism, Roman sensed opportunity in his native Poland, which he left in 1945, and in 1989 began to tackle the unbelievable bureaucracy and administrative disorder managing finally to incorporate in 1990. His son Stefan joined soon after, and now runs the company.
Thanks to Roman’s industry contacts worldwide, business grew rapidly. We moved many of the first foreign executives and their families to Warsaw, pioneering shipments direct via Polish ports
and airports, avoiding routing via Germany and The Netherlands, and cutting transit times and costs – always doing what is best for our customers.
Today and tomorrow, every day, we strive to continue Jean and Roman’s initiative and entrepreneurship that has enabled us to become – Poland’s Worldwide Mover.
